If you have a septic system, it’s inevitable that the system will need some work done, and that’s when you realize you need septic pumping in Hesperia. Septic systems will rarely go more than 4-5 years without needing to at least be drained.

However, it can be trickier knowing exactly what sort of work you need. Depending on the situation, you might only need a septic repair, or you might need further maintenance. Or even replacement. So today, we have a quick guide to knowing what sort of septic service and repair you may need.

How to Know What Sort Of Work Your Septic System Needs

  1. You might need to drain if…

Drain cleaning is by far the most common sort of maintenance needed by a septic system. Ideally, you should drain the tank every 3-4 years even without seeing any “symptoms” of problems. However, once a tank is full, you’ll typically see problems such as standing water in the basement, slow- or non-draining toilets and sinks, or bad odors coming from your drainwork. If it’s been at least three years since your last tank pumping, that’s almost certainly the issue. If not…

  1. You might need repairs if…

Basically, if you’re seeing any of the above problems or others and it’s only been a year or two since your last pumping, it’s probably a more serious repair issue. If the problem is wastewater backing up into your home -or never leaving at all- it generally means, there’s a broken or clogged pipe between your home and the tank. If you’re seeing small patches of water above the tank outside, or your lawn smells bad, it’s probably an issue between the tank and the drain field.

Unless…

  1. You might need replacements if…

If it’s a problem with the drain field itself, things can get expensive. A drain field will typically work for around twenty years, give or take, but eventually it too will become clogged and unable to properly filter the water flowing into it. Replacing or moving the drain field will require a lot of digging, and may even disrupt your landscaping if it’s too close to the field.
